В первую же неделю после выхода альбома было продано более 286 000 копий, и альбом достиг второй строчки хит-парада Billboard 200. В поддержку альбома были выпущены синглы «By the Way», «The Zephyr Song», «Can’t Stop», «Dosed» и «Universally Speaking».
Американская ассоциация звукозаписывающих компаний присвоила альбому дважды платиновый статус 19 октября 2007 года.
Работа над By the Way началась весной 2001 года. Продюсером альбома был приглашён Рик Рубин. Как и Californication, By the Way сочинялся большей частью в домашних условиях. Фрущанте и Кидис могли работать целыми днями, обсуждая гитарные ходы и тексты. Для Кидиса «создание By the Way отличалось от Californication. Джон обрёл себя и наполнялся уверенностью».
By the Way был тепло принят критиками за мелодизм и отклонение от предыдущих стилей группы. Альбом содержит очень мало сплава фанка и панка, прославившего группу как таковую. На By the Way проявился более искренний и рефлексивный подход Кидиса к написанию песен.
Фрущанте заявил, что сочинение и запись By the Way были одними из самых счастливых моментов в его жизни.
