Bass player and composer Antoine Fafard started to write and record his own music in the mid-1990s, and began to release his work in 2000. After six albums with his band Spaced Out, Antoine launched Solus Operandi, his first album under his own name, in 2011.
Solus Operandi defined Antoine’s new approach, which broke all limitations of orchestration, performance and collaboration. His 2013 album Occultus Tramitis featured an impressive roster of collaborators that included some of the most significant musicians from the jazz fusion world including Terry Bozzio, Jerry Goodman, Gavin Harrison, Scott Henderson, Simon Phillips, Chad Wackerman and Dave Weckl.
Released in October 2014, Antoine’s new album Ad Perpetuum is slightly different to his previous two collections in that there is a continuity to the personnel contributing to it. Drumming legend Vinnie Colaiuta and guitarist extraordinare Jerry De Villiers Jr feature on all the tracks. Additional guests include keyboardist Gerry Etkins on three songs and saxophonist Jean-Pierre Zanella on another three tracks. Another significant contribution comes from Gary Husband, who features in the intense drum duet D-Day.
Vinnie Colaiuta and Jerry De Villiers Jr were involved in the Ad Perpetuum project from its inception. A two-day session booked with Vinnie for January 2014 provided the deadline for writing the material, giving Antoine a three-month window to compose all the pieces for the album. This was the first time that Antoine had been challenged to meet a specific deadline for a personal project.
The music on Ad Perpetuum encompasses a broad spectrum of grooves and atmospheres. A conscious effort was made to offer a multitude of tempos, time signatures, structures and harmonic variations in order to showcase the virtuosity of the players. De Villiers Jr’s incredible guitar playing and tone brings a deep vitality to the music, while Colaiuta’s playing is simply flawless.
